My Origin Story February 18, 2017

So I wanted to talk about my origin story, how exactly did I get into watching Korean dramas or any other Asian dramas? I want to your story as well since it seems like an uncommon hobby! So first of all it started around 2010/2011 Netflix first came out in Canada! So I tried it and I watched anime for the first time, well I have seen anime before this with my brother but nothing that I really loved. Netflix was streaming Fruits Basket and that completely got me hooked. How did they put so much emotion into a animated series! It was just really different from the North American view of animation. I then watched Ouran High which was also really enjoyable. I then looked up Ouran High on the internet and found that it was a manga and I could read what happens past the anime.

I then was introduced into the world of manga. I then started searching for more anime’s online and I came across Nana and that series blew everything out of the water. It took my heart out and stomped it on the ground! I seriously have never felt so invested in a story before. I of course then turned to the manga to find out what happened and sadly the writer has stopped writing the series due to her health. I am still holding out hope that she will finish it one day.!

So after that I was at my local library looking at books and came across a manga section in the library which made me excited, I picked up all the copies of the manhwa Goong and took it home. I quickly read through the few books that there was and of course then turned to the internet to find out more about it. So I kept reading it online and one day I was searching it and came across a live action of the series. I thought it was like a movie so I watched about two hours and was so confused that it wasn’t ending. I then did more research and realized it was a Korean TV series. Weirdly enough I didn’t like it that much to keep watching it and so I left it for a while. But for some reason I went back to the Korean dramas and I found one that was recommended and so the first drama that I completed was Boys Over Flowers which completely sold me into the world of Korean dramas. I haven’t really looked back and have fallen into the wonderland hole of Korean Dramas! So how did your addiction start?

Ghost in the Shell Controversy April 18, 2016

Here is a link to an article discussing the controversy if you want more information.

So I just wanted to comment on this controversy as I keep seeing it in the news.I just want to talk about the controversy in the new hollywood remake movie for Ghost in the Shell. This is a live action remake of the anime. First of all I have not watched the anime but this does make me want to watch it. It is one of the most popular anime’s ever and the producers have cast Scarlett Johnansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi who is Japanese in the story. They even considered thinking of digitally altering her to look more Asian, apparently this isn’t true but who really knows. As an Asian actor in America I could not imagine how frustrating it is, the few roles that even have Japanese characters are not even given to you. I just think this is crazy after all that has happened at the Oscars with the boycott because of the lack of roles and oscar nominations for African Americans and other races. For some reason they only focused on African Americans where meanwhile Asians were not even given a mention. Here is a movie where they could help change the way people see Asians by making an amazing anime and making it authentic and they instead dismiss this chance and give the role to white person again.

I think the main problems with this is because it has happened so many times before where movies just cast white people as other races, and frankly it is disrespectful and it has never helped a movie before. It becomes a joke and no one takes it seriously. I really hope the director changes his mind and casts someone that is better suited for the role.

Asian Men In Hollywood June 12, 2014

Filed under: extra — sighilovekdramas @ 6:07 pm

So I have noticed after watching a lot of asian dramas that asian men are just not given many roles in Hollywood. So when I do see an Asian man on television I get excited because it feels so rare. I mean there are exceptions and asian men can do well I mean Jackie Chan has done really well for himself but he is an exception. Often asian men are stereotyped as nerds or martial artists but they never become the hero or the love interest much in movies etc. This of course affects how the west sees Asian men and they are not seen as desirable as European men. This may also be the case for other countries in the world not portrayed in Hollywood. I mean if you have European descent you are seen as attractive in the West. Anyways I was watching a music video on tv and came across this music video that had an asian man as the love interest and that made me excited and I thought I should share it with everyone. The singer is called Sebell and the song is called  Till The Sun Burns Out. I tried to find the name of the actor but couldn’t! Anyway I hope you all check it out and enjoy!! I realize that this is a reference to books, but I feel like this can be relateable to dramas and mangas!
