A Good Day To Be A Dog

This drama is about Han Hae-Na (Park Gyu-Young) who is a young woman with a family curse that causes the people in her family including her to turn into a dog when they are kissed at midnight and then turn back into a human in the morning. The curse can only be lifted if the person kisses them in dog form but if they kiss a new person it will happen again. Hae-Na makes a drunken mistake and ends up kissing Jin Seo-Won (Cha Eun-Woo) who is a fellow teacher at the school and unfortunately he doesn’t seem to like Hae-Na very much. This drama is based off the webtoon with the same name. I have read the webtoon but it was a while ago and I don’t really remember too many details but this drama definitely felt different than the webtoon, at least to me.

This drama felt really dragged out to me and I think part of the problem was that it was only airing once a week and even missed a week at the beginning and then they seemed to make special episodes on top of it. I really don’t like when they do that and make these filler episodes and they also relied on a lot of flashbacks which I tend to skip over in all dramas. They seemed to hype up this drama to a ridiculous degree when it wasn’t anything that exciting or better than any other drama. I didn’t love the whole backstory of the curse story line, I thought the webtoon was much different in that area as well. I think they should have stuck more to the webtoon then invent their own story. I didn’t love the whole reincarnation plot in the drama and skipped over parts that I didn’t want to watch. For some reason I just had a hard time buying Cha Eun-Woo as a teacher when I have only seen him in roles where he is a student and for some reason I don’t know if it was his character but he seemed really stiff in his role. I noticed some people complaining about his acting skills and just relying on his good looks and that might be the case to some degree but I think it was partly the characters he is playing who are all aloof and don’t show much emotion.

I did enjoy the basic story line of the drama where she is trying to get him to kiss her as a dog and all the hi jinks that happen because of it and it is a very sweet type of romance. The story may flow better as well now that it has all aired and you don’t have to wait so long to get through the drama. It was interesting and the romance was sweet and funny. I thought it was decent drama but not worth the hype of it and had way too many flashbacks.

Perfect Marriage Revenge

This drama is based off a webtoon and it stars Han Yi-Joo (Jung Yoo-Min) who lives a pitiful life as she was adopted by parents that do not love her and treat her badly. She gets married to man that is actually in love with her sister and ends up getting into a car crash and dying but when she wakes up she realizes she has gone back in time and decides to take revenge on her adopted family and the first thing she does is approach Seo Do-Guk (Sung Hoon) and ask him to marry her. This drama is based off a webtoon and I think they stick pretty well to the general story of the webtoon but there is of course some differences but the big picture stays the same.

I think this drama did a good job of telling the story without becoming too over the top like a soap opera even though it definitely is more along the lines of that kind of drama. I liked how fast paced the drama was and there was no boring episodes as something was always happening and lot of plot twists. As I have read the webtoon I wasn’t as shocked by anything in the drama so I think it would be more fun and exciting if you didn’t know how things were going to turn out. The changes that are made I understand some of them because they didn’t have the time like a webtoon and had to speed things up or the character was a bit different because it would give a bigger plot twist later. I enjoyed the acting and the characters. I really don’t have any complaints or nothing stood out that bothered me about the drama. I thought the villains did a good job making us hate them and the main leads did a good job making us love them!

My only complaint was that the drama seemed too short on time like it was somewhat rushed through the drama but it was understandable! I wish the love story could be more developed like they would have more time to slowly open up their hearts to each other as it seemed like they needed more time to tell the story. I also don’t care when dramas need to go into supernatural, going to see a psychic or whatever you call them, I always skip over those parts.

Overall it was pretty good drama if you like romance, revenge and drama!

The Matchmakers

This drama is about Jung-Woo (Ro Woon) who is an intelligent young man that was the youngest to place first in the state examination but he was instead chosen to be husband to the Princess so he wouldn’t be allowed to participate in politics and then the princess ends up dying on her wedding day leaving him stuck unable to remarry or take a government post. It also stars Jung Soon-Deok (Cho Yi-Hyun) who is a widow in a very prominent family but secretly sneaks out and lives the life of a matchmaker under the pseudonym of Yeojoo-daek and has the reputation of being an excellent matchmaker. Jung-Woo gets roped into matchmaking some older sisters that have sworn off marriage and he recruits the help of Yeojoo-daek to help them do the impossible.

I thought it was a pretty interesting drama as it doesn’t just focus on the overthrowing of the King which what seems to be most historical type dramas focus on, I mean that is still a focus in this drama trying to choose the heir of the throne but I liked the whole matchmaking theme and it feels like a more interesting focus. I have to say the whole widow thing and devoting your life to serving the family is one of the most frustrating ideas to think about! I think how they dealt with the problem was stressful and really sad. I really liked the humor and the fun characters in this drama and made it really enjoyable to watch. I don’t know if I really thought there was much chemistry between the main leads, I don’t know why I wasn’t totally buying it but I seemed to enjoy the side characters love stories like the youngest sister’s romance and I also really liked Yeojoo-daek’s sister-in-law’s romance, they were really sweet.

There was also kinda of a controversial match that is made in the drama between a young man that is like 14 or 15 and the woman who was at least over 20. It was just too weird and I don’t like how they did that match, I know some people are saying that it was normal for a young man to get married young but I highly doubt they would be matched with someone older than them. Also I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have chosen the younger sister to be the one to end up with the young man? It would have been less disturbing in my mind. Not to mention the young man looked , sounded and acted much younger I would have thought he was like 12. I just don’t understand this type of writing it seemed highly unnecessary. Also it was kinda insulting when they are saying these men and women are so old and they are in their twenties, it was just laughable but again it was different times.

The ending was good and I was happy that it ended well but at the same time I expected the main lead characters would have had some secret plans and some well thought out plan to get out of the predicament. Instead it was just fly by the seat of my pants and if we die then we die. I was kinda disappointed that Jung-Woo who is supposedly the “smart” guy was doing something so reckless and not even trying to properly solve the problem. I also was confused how the evil character was barely punished even though they were committing treason. I just had higher expectations for the characters and writing of the story.

It was generally a good drama that has humor, romance and tension!

The Deal

This drama is about Lee Joon-Sung (Yoo Seung-Ho) who has lots of regrets and still has debt that he owes and meets up with his high school friend Song Jae-Hyo (Kim Dong-Hwi) who is also in trouble and needs money and he hatches a plan after a night of drinking with another high school friend Park Min-Woo (Yoo Su-Bin) to kidnap Min-Woo as he comes from a rich family.

This is a short series with only 8 episodes about 45 minutes so it isn’t a long series and it is a very tense action-packed type of drama. You keep thinking it can’t get worse than this and then it just keeps getting worse. It is a roller coaster of emotions and you can’t even root for the main characters of the drama and you aren’t even sure how to feel anymore by the end of it. It is definitely full of plot twists and turns. I think if you like thriller dramas you would definitely enjoy this drama. There are many times you think this is it they are going to finally get caught but yet it keeps going. I found Jae-Hyo’s motivation and ideals just don’t really make sense how does he think that he is going to become a doctor after all that has happened and I don’t think money will fix his problems. He really seems like the most delusional of the characters and is not thinking realistically at all.

I just didn’t care for all of the swearing and cursing in the drama it was really over the top for me. At times you just wanted to scream at the characters actions but I can’t say I was disappointed at the end and was actually surprised at how it could all turn out that way. I think if you can get past the cursing and violence it was interesting drama.

The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract

This drama is about Park Yeon-Woo (Lee Se-Young) in the 19th century who is forced to get married by her family and ends up marrying a man that she knows and he tells her that he a heart disease and apologizes for his family’s deception and dies in front of her eyes. Yeon-Woo then gets kidnapped and gets thrown down a well and when she opens her eyes she is in water and the man who saves her looks like her husband Kang Tae-Ha (Bae In-Hyuk) and ends up asking her to get married to him because his bride has not shown up. She has appeared in present day and doesn’t understand how she has time traveled from her time.

I really enjoy time traveling dramas because it is so fun to see someone try and navigate modern times and it was fun for a while but she adjusted too well to the modern times. She had no problem wearing the modern clothes and all of a sudden can work in a modern office with computers and cell phones. No one was really teaching her anything and yet they didn’t want to spend anytime on that aspect of her character learning the modern ways. I think it would have been way more funny and enjoyable if they spent a little more time letting her get used to the modern tech stuff. It just felt a bit ridiculous as someone watching her having no problems fitting into the culture and actually succeeding on a huge scale.

I also found the plot holes to be aggravating in this drama, they just made up random rules and then all of a sudden those rules aren’t a problem anymore with no real explanation. The mysterious person that would keep showing up but was literally no help and gave them no advice was annoying. For some reason with the inevitable separation of the main couple I didn’t even feel sad for them or have an emotional reaction. It seemed to me that it wasn’t written in a way that I felt the strong emotional tug between the two characters and I felt more of a longing and emotional response to the 19th Century couple. They really did the 19th century Tae-Ha dirty though, he really got the short end of the stick and it made me frustrated and upset. The way they ended the 19th Century storyline I kinda wanted to slap Yeon-Woo for the way she was acting. The plot hole of everyone from the past being in modern times which means there was 2 of everybody but Yeon-Woo and her maid. Why wasn’t there a modern version of Yeon-Woo if everyone else was around. I would have preferred if she never went back in the past but instead would have just fixed the problems in the present.

It wasn’t a sad ending at least but in some ways it didn’t seem like a happy ending in my mind either. Overall it was decent drama that kept me guessing and kept me interested all the way to the end.

CEO-dol Mart

This drama is about a former idol boy group called Thunder Boys that after a tragedy got disbanded and they find out years later that they were given Boram Mart and they all come together after not keeping in contact and have to decide whether they are going to sell the mart or try and make it work and run a mart. It stars Choi Ho-Rang (Lee Sin-Young) who is the leader of Thunder Boys and is always trying his best to take care of everyone. It also stars Shin Tae-Ho (Xiumin) who is often causing problems and is considered immature. The 5 members also need help in running the mart and Oh Ye-Rim (Choi Jung-Woon) a former employee also joins them to help them out as she is struggling to land a job.

It is a short drama with 10 episodes and so it doesn’t really get too far with the story line and it is more of a feel-good, heart warming story of friendship and working together. I didn’t really have high hopes for this drama because it just didn’t look like a big budget drama but I surprisingly enjoyed the moments of the drama even though it is a bit on the cheesier side. You want to root for them to be able to work together and find happiness but it ends really quickly and they didn’t really get time to develop the characters or even a love line. It definitely felt like a rushed ending and with the possibility that there could be a new season but I highly doubt that it will continue on. It had some awkward acting and unrealistic elements to this drama but I just enjoyed the happy silly mood of the drama, it didn’t bother me too much. Also if you are fans of the idols in the drama it would make sense to watch it!

If you just want to watch a simple, feel-good drama I would recommend.

Battle For Happiness

This drama is about Oh Yoo-Jin (Park Hyo-Joo) who is a mother and social media influencer, she is running the show at her children’s kindergarten and among the parents. She is fierce and keeps all the other Mother’s in check while looking perfect on social media. Jang Mi-Ho (Lee El) works in the marketing department for a bank and comes across Oh Yoo-Jin’s applicant for a contest and is reminded of their past with each other. She gets back in contact with her and wants to work out the differences they had in the past with each other but is unable to do so as Yoo-Jin doesn’t want to cooperate and before she can fix the problem there is a murder that happens and Mi-Ho has to try and figure out what happened.

I think this drama started out strong and had a lot of potential to be one of intrigue and suspense but the writing got worse as the episodes went on and not to mention this drama has 16 episodes that just seemed too long! What was the most tiring was Mi-Ho’s character, she would just run headlong into situations and not even develop a plan or do anything smart! In real life she would have been killed after a few times of trying that out. I mean if you think someone was the murderer you shouldn’t just outright accuse them, I mean develop a plan and watch them or try to befriend them and check them out. Honestly Yoo-Jin’s character would have been way better at figuring out the mystery and much less frustrating even though she wasn’t really a good character. The way Mi-Ho acted around the real murderer was so stupid in the last episodes and it was like she lacked all common sense. Even I watched all the episodes I still don’t really get the feud between Mi-Ho and Yoo-Jin which if you made the central part of the drama, you would think the writer would make it very clear and it would have been portrayed better how they were each wrong. I still don’t get what Mi-Ho really did to Yoo-Jin and why she needs to be apologetic towards Yoo-Jin? It just didn’t feel like Yoo-Jin had enough conviction to hate Mi-Ho. Yoo-Jin made her own decisions and how she ended up was her own fault. It was also a little much that all the men portrayed in this drama was pretty much evil and garbage human beings, it reminds me of the Queen of Masks and how all the men were portrayed in the same way and has the same type of themes.

I think it was interesting for the first couple of episodes but the only reason I hung in there was it was fun to see her taking care of the two little girls and becoming a better person because she had someone to take care of. I still felt compelled to watch the show because you want to figure out what happened and that is the only reason to keep watching. I still I’m not sure what the moral of the story of this drama was? Yoo-Jin tried to have the perfect family but it was completely fake ? I feel like the person that needed to learn the lesson died so it just feels unsatisfactory? This story just seemed to be convoluted and there seemed to be loose ends at the ending that don’t get cleaned up.

It is definitely a melodrama and not the best one out there but it does take you on a ride.

Twinkling Watermelon

This drama is about a high school student Eun Gyeol (Ryeo Un) who is struggling as a child of parents that are deaf. He really wants to play music but he doesn’t want his Father to know because he doesn’t think he will understand. He then mysteriously travels back in time when his parents are teenagers and He meets his father Han Yi-Chan (Choi Hyun-Wook) and the girl that his father has a crush on Choi Se-Kyung (Seol In-A). His Father is in love with a girl that isn’t his Mother so he needs to fix this problem and make sure his Father and Mother meet.

This is a really fun drama about youth and trying to understand your parents, how fun would it be if you could go back in time and meet your parents when they were young, innocent and hopeful. How much would you be able to connect and empathize if you knew them from a different era of their lives. I really love the concept behind this drama because Eun-Gyeol is really trying to carry the burden of the whole family by being the only hearing person in the family and this time travel trip allows him to understand his Father better. The focus on the drama is not just a typical love story in fact that is such a small part of the story it really delves into what is friendship and family. I really liked the mystery of it all and loved that it had plot twists throughout the drama. It had a good flow and was well-written and really kept you guessing on how the future was going to be changed by Eun-Gyeol’s decisions and actions in the past. I also found it really interesting in having a storyline with characters that were deaf and being able to see the world through their eyes and the challenges they face was eye-opening. I really loved the love and story line of Eun-Gyeol’s parents, the love and overcoming challenges was really great.

The only problem I had with the drama was the ending, it was too rushed and they could have done so much more with it and given it more time to really dig into a good ending. It just felt too sudden and didn’t feel very authenticate to what Eun-Gyeol had been through. Also they didn’t revisit Se-Kyung’s family in the future so it felt like we are missing so much information and even what happened with the grandpa from the music shop, if his future had changed at all.

So overall it was a great drama even if the ending was somewhat lacking a in depth conclusion.

July Drama Reviews 2023

Queen of Masks

This drama is about 4 women who are friends. Jae-Yi (Kim Sun-A) who is a human rights lawyer and has her eyes set on becoming a mayor. It also stars Go Yoo-No (Oh Yoon-Ah) who comes back after 10 years and being framed for a murder case to try and find her daughter. This drama is about a murder case that happens to 4 women who used to all be friends but one of them gets framed for the murder. It is 10 years later and Go Yoo-Na (Oh Yoon-Ah) the woman framed for the murder is back and she is trying to find her daughter. She goes to her old friends Jae-Yi (Kim Sun-A) who is a human rights lawyer to try and get their help to get her daughter back. It also stars Ju Yu-Jeong (Shin Eun-Jung) who is a chairwoman of an arts foundation and is just getting her life back on track with the new man in her life. The other friend is Yoon Hae-Mi (Yoo-Sun) who is a vice president of Mariana Hotel and is trying to climb the ladder to success as well. Jae-Yi is also trying to climb the ladder to success to try and find the man who sexually assaulted her the night of the murder and has to decide what is more important her friends or justice.

So this drama is very much a melodramatic drama and I don’t think I have watched this genre before or anything at least this extreme. I keep thinking whether I should continue watching it or not because it felt like a soap opera and I didn’t know if it was going to get really bad. I was kinda surprised about the drugs mentioned in the drama as I feel like I never really seen drama go to that area and I have to say I didn’t care for one of the characters struggling with drugs. The writing of the characters didn’t really make sense to me most of the time. Jae-Yi is supposed to be this lawyer but she does some of the dumbest things in the drama. She gets the mask with blood on it and they act like this is true evidence of something and try to use it to get the perpetrator to do what they want when clearly this doesn’t mean a thing and wouldn’t change anything. A lot of the reasoning and technical stuff just doesn’t even make sense at times. They make a lot of stupid decisions in the drama that frustrated me. One of the characters buries some video files instead of looking at them or handing them into the police, just sheer stupidity is witnessed throughout this drama.

This drama did not need 16 episodes and even went over an hour with each one, it should have been shorter and more consistent with the characters and made them smarter. The ending did seem a bit anticlimactic after the build up but at least it was a decent ending, at least for the majority of the characters. This drama wasn’t all bad it still was interesting to see how the mystery played out and to get to know each of the characters more and I have to say the perpetrator did some good acting despite him being the bad guy. It was also kinda nice to see a cast of older women instead of teenagers and give them an opportunity to tell a story.

If you could get past some of the frustrating parts of the drama it was still an interesting drama that kept me guessing at times and had some decent twists and turns to keep you invested. It wasn’t a great drama but it wasn’t a horrible drama either it was just an okay drama.

All That We Loved

This drama is about two high-schoolers Go Yoo (Sehun) who loves basketball and is a outgoing personality who is very protective of his friend who is like a brother to him Go Joon-Hee (Jo Joon-Young) who is a quiet and is always studying and does well in school. They both meet Han So-Yeon (Jang Yeo-Bin) and they both start to have feelings for her but she likes to keep people at a distance from her because of her own secret.

This drama was pretty good until the ending, I thought it was building up well and it was interesting flipping from the present to the past but unfortunately the ending was super disappointing. Super important things in the story are not explained at all and the love line in the drama was also super weak. I think if they had more time to properly tell the story it could have been a really good drama and the build up in the drama and pacing was good but the just needed more time. I don’t know if they just couldn’t figure out an explanation and got lazy or if they just needed the time to wrap it up properly. Also some of the medical conditions seemed sketchy and really unbelievable but I was willing to go along with it until they gave us the lackluster ending.

I did like the acting and was impressed and even though I didn’t like the ending I still found it interesting and compelling and would still watch again. It is a shorter drama with less time and episodes so it is not like you wasted too many hours to get a crappy ending. I would still watch it again because I still enjoyed the ride even though it felt like there was too many loose ends and unanswered questions at the end. It has some interesting concepts with how people can change and how other people can affect you. I still thought it was interesting and would still say check it out but be warned your questions won’t all be answered at the end.

Oh! Young Sim

This drama is about Oh Young Sim (Song Ha-Yoon) who is a struggling TV variety show PD who keeps getting her show cancelled due to low popularity. She casts a popular new start up company CEO Mark Wang (Lee Dong-Hae) in a dating pilot program. She finds out that he is her childhood friend that had a crush on her and their friendship ended on bad terms.

So this is a short drama felt more like a webtoon so again it felt like the writers had to speed things up and I found that to cause a lot of elements to feel like it was lacking. They don’t build out the characters and the romance as well as they could and it was somewhat disappointing. The ending was super rushed and felt kinda weird, it just didn’t feel like I had an emotional investment in this drama. It wasn’t very funny either. Some of the writing seemed sloppy especially for the action type of scene in the drama. Also I am getting really sick of the childhood unrequited love trope in all dramas. It just feels like they threw this drama together really fast and felt kind of cheap. At least it was short then so you didn’t waste too much of your time.

I think the drama had potential but it just totally missed the mark!

A Warmed Up Love

This is a Japanese Drama where Kiki Inoue (Mori Nana) who is a part-timer at a convenience store and she also is a social media reviewer of sweets and is very good at understanding what sweets will be popular. She meets the new CEO Takumi Asaba (Tomoya Nakamura) of the convenience store chain and he eventually finds out about her reviews and decides to enlist her help to create a new dessert for the store.

I enjoyed this drama it was an interesting concept of developing a dessert for a convenience store and how they are developed and the problems that go along with it. It was also interesting because of the different relationships and how two similar people aren’t always the best match in love. It felt somewhat fresh and I like that they didn’t spend the whole time forcing love and making someone a couple from the first episode. I think it was interesting because it showed different types of loves not just the chemical reaction of love. It showed the mature type of love where you fit together because you have the same mindset and then the more immature type of love, where you are safe to be silly and play with each other. It somehow finds the middle ground in the drama and it has a good ending where I was satisfied. I also like that it was a more ambiguous type of love story where you kinda had moments where you were guessing who was going to end up with each other.

The only thing I didn’t like about this drama was maybe how Kiki was somewhat immature at times and it felt somewhat concerning with the age gap that was in this drama. I wasn’t that bothered but at times felt a little bit weird.

I would recommend if you like a cute, short romantic drama!

Lies Hidden In My Garden

This drama is about Moon Joo-Ran (Kim Tae-Hee) is a traumatized woman that is living as a housewife to her husband Jae-Ho (Kim Sung-Oh) who is a doctor. They live in a nice house in a rich neighborhood. Joo-Ran starts noticing a foul smell coming from her garden and her husband tries to dismiss her concerns. It also stars Chu Sang-Eun (Lim Ji-Yeon) who is struggling to live with an abusive husband while being pregnant. The women’s live intersect when Sang-Eun’s husband winds up dead.

I did not like this drama at all, it felt very dark and depressing through the whole eight episodes and thank goodness they only had eight of them. I know it was supposed to have all these plot twists and turns but it just didn’t feel that shocking while watching it. I hated the ambience of the drama, it felt like a cheap thriller movie all the time where there is always someone bad lurking around the corner. It felt really obvious and the motives of the people just weren’t convincing to me at all. The cinematography was honestly annoying with the artsy type shots and the super long pauses in the dialogue. I fast forwarded a lot while watching and started to get annoyed while watching, they could have spent more time building the character. The silence just didn’t have meaning to me, there are some dramas that utilize this technique well but it just didn’t have a good effect to me for this one. I think I was most annoyed with Moon Joo-Ran’s character and what she was thinking because it felt like I couldn’t get a good grasp on her ideas and motives for this story. She is weak and bothered by her sister’s death which I still don’t understand what happened there and why the whole world seems to blame her for the death, which is absurd?? They spent so much time in this drama focusing on her sister’s death and it doesn’t even get explained at the end was highly disappointing to me. I guess they were just using it as an excuse for her husband to gaslight her I suppose.

Honestly the last two episodes just seemed like bizarre behavior, I don’t understand why Joo-Ran wouldn’t get the police involved in the situation instead of doing the crazy stuff she did at the end. It just seemed like there was no redeeming qualities in any of the characters in this drama and I just couldn’t wrap my head around their behaviors. I just want to say this allowed murder is wrong and bad but self-defense is a completely different idea. It is strange because normally when you watch a mystery type drama you find yourself curious but somehow I just wasn’t that curious, maybe because every character on this drama seemed to be bad and evil what they do wasn’t surprising at all. If they showed a completely different personality and then found out they did something evil, it would be more shocking. It also seemed to give the message that men are evil and will abuse their wives which can happen in real life but every character was giving this message.

If I could say anything good about this drama is that acting was well done, at times I had to skip over because it was just too hard to watch some scenes.

I personally did not like this drama and wouldn’t recommend unless you like thriller dramas that are dark and depressing!

Today’s Webtoon

This dramas stars Ma- Eum (Kim Se-Jeong) who used to be a judo athlete, but wants to transition into a different job after suffering an injury. She uses her passion and love for webtoons to eventually get hired at a struggling Webtoon department and becomes an editor. It also stars Goo Jun-Yeong (Nam Yoon-Soo) as a newly transferred employee into the webtoon department, he doesn’t understand what he is doing there as an editor but starts to fit in after working together with Ma-Eum.

This drama did a great job of keeping the story interesting and something with depth. As someone who likes to read webtoons, it was interesting to see the work that goes on behind the scenes to create a webtoon and the mechanics of it. I really liked how it was a big cast and they showed the different characters and the problems they face as artists, editors and managers. It really kept the momentum of the show going and the different way they could solve problems was interesting. I was also surprised at the depth that they went into with especially Shin Dae-Ryuk’s character and it was interesting understanding his thinking and his past. I think this drama is an embodiment of the underdog spirit, they know they are fighting for their life but they keep their belief and are able to accomplish what was considered impossible. I really like these type of stories because it feels hopeful. It is nice to watch a heart warming drama that makes you feel good which this drama did well.

What I didn’t like was that the ending was good but it seemed to lack impact and the love lines kinda got lost in the mix of the drama. I am not sure what they were trying to do, it seemed for a while they wanted a love triangle and then took a sharp left and then just kinda left it hanging. I think the romance department was pretty lacking and to me if you don’t want to commit to that then it would be better to just omit the whole love line sequence in the drama altogether. I don’t really have much complaints about this drama. I thought it was very good and I connected with the characters and felt the story was interesting and didn’t find myself bored in the drama.

I would recommend this drama if you like heart warming and office style dramas.

Poong The Joseon Psychiatrist

Poong is about a physician Yoo Se Poong (Kim Min-Jae) that was famous for working for the royal family but gets kicked out the royal court and he has become unable to use his needles due to trauma and eventually finds his way to a doctor and a bunch of misfits that work there. He starts to work as a doctor that instead of using acupuncture to heal people he learns to treat and people’s mental pain that is affecting their physical bodies. Just to warn everybody that there is plans for a second season and this was planned from the start so the ending is a definitely a cliffhanger, so don’t go into watching it thinking that everything will be wrapped up at the end.

I am a sucker for dramas about acupuncture and psychology and they have mixed the two in this drama. I thought it was a very well made drama the way they told the story and the way they treated each patient was interesting and was always a mystery that needed to be solved. Of course they had greedy officials which I find very tiring in the historical type dramas but at least the story and plots were somewhat more interesting than the typical way they try to be evil. I also really liked the misfit group of people and enjoyed the humor that was sprinkled throughout the drama. I really liked the feel good aspect of the drama and enjoyed the characters and humor. I thought it was interesting to see dealing with mental health in historical type times since I haven’t really seen this be done before I thought it was a fresh perspective .

What I didn’t like about this drama was the chemistry was a bit lacking between the male and female leads. It didn’t ever really give me butterflies or twinges that they were meant to be together. This could be because they were planning a second season so they wanted to leave something to be explored in a second season so I am not too bothered by this aspect about this drama.

I would recommend this drama if you like medical/psychology type dramas

If You Wish Upon Me

This drama is about Yoon Gyeo -Rye (Ji Chang-Wook) a man that has lived a rough life and has found himself having to volunteer at a hospice for causing an accident. He starts to change as a person there after he gets involved with volunteer team leader Kang Tae-Sik (Sung Dong-ll) and Nurse Seo Yeon-Joo (Sooyoung) and their team that grants wishes to those who are dying. For the first time Gyeo-Rye starts to understand how to be truly happy for the first time even when having to face death head on.

This is a great drama if you need something to sob uncontrollably to something. I didn’t know if I could handle watching this drama since in almost every episode there is death or dealing with really tough situations. I kinda wanted to give up after an episode or two but somehow it was still interesting and I wanted to keep watching even if I ended up with a headache from crying to this drama. I though Chang-Wook did a great job which I was surprised because I didn’t really like other dramas that he was in but I thought he did a great job in this one. I liked how they showed the different people’s last wishes and it kept it interesting even though it was heart breaking.

What I didn’t like was some ideas they had in this drama was unrealistic, I don’t want to say too much but it had to do with a coma patient. Also I don’t really get how they can work and live there as volunteers, it is somewhat strange concept to me also is there enough money for a wage especially as they are volunteers. Again I didn’t really feel the chemistry between the two main leads, it was a interesting dynamic but I didn’t really feel the spark between them, they seemed more like brother and sister to me. They have cute moments but I never really got the passionate love between them more of a familial type love to me.

This is a tear jerking drama that is somewhat unrealistic but has heart and I would recommend it!

Good Job

This drama is about Eun Seon-Woo (Jung II-Woo) who owns Eun Kang Group one of the largest companies but does undercover work and loves disguises while he searches for his mom’s killer. He is doing it undercover and has to deal with snakes within his company since everyone wants his downfall. It also stars Don Se-ra (Kwon Yuri) who was born with hyper-acuity and is able to see farther than anyone else. She is caring and wants to take care of her family that was with her together in the orphanage. She works odd jobs and runs into Seon-Woo and he gets her onboard with his work and they make a great team investigating.

I think this was a fun drama with a bit of mystery and romance. I think I appreciated the humour aspect of it and the drama didn’t always take itself very seriously and that made it more watchable. I thought the main leads had good chemistry even though it seemed like they never kissed or got very romantic even at the end. They seemed to hold hands and hug a lot more which seemed a little odd by the end but I didn’t mind it, it was cute. It has a good ending and it seemed like they were hinting at a second season which could be interesting but I am not dying to second season or anything though. Honestly the plot twist was pretty good and had me fooled.

I am not sure I loved Yuri’s acting or if it was her character, I just found it lacking somewhat for the main lead but it wasn’t terrible or anything. One thing I thought was not great was the disguises that they would wear, they acted as if they were very good at going undercover but it was pretty laughable most of the time.

This is a fun romantic comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously and I recommend if you want a light drama with some mystery.

March/April/May 2020 Korean Drama Review June 3, 2020

The first drama that I finished was Hi Bye, Mama! The plot is about Cha Yu-Ri (Kim Tae-Hee) who died 5years ago and was watching over her child and husband as a ghost. She suddenly gets a chance to become human for 49 days and she is given the chance of life again. In the meantime her husband has remarried and her child that she never got to meet has been able to see ghosts and Yu-Ri makes it her mission to fix the problem.

This was an interesting drama because it was focused on Motherly love as opposed to romantic love and what it means to be a mother. I think it had a good message especially because it seems like adoption is kinda of a taboo idea in South Korea. For some reason adoption is not accepted or normal thing in South Korea. I think this drama tries to validate the idea that if you adopt a baby you become the parent and nothing is wrong or abnormal with that and the relationship is the same as any other parent child relationship. Even though Yu-Ri is the blood mother of Seo-Woo doesn’t automatically mean that Seo-Woo will accept her as her mother because she has been raised by Min-Jung and their bond is important. Honestly I wasn’t really expecting the drama to go in the direction that it did, just because it doesn’t seem like a happy ending for everyone and usually Kdramas don’t go in that direction. So this drama has a different feel and is about relationships that tie us all together but not necessarily the ones tied to romantic love. It was honestly refreshing to have a different kind of drama among the usually sweet and sappy love stories that are typically told.

The one thing that bothered me was that Yu-Ri’s parents felt like they had to separate themselves from Seo-Woo and that just seemed so sad and would feel devastating to lose that connection. It didn’t really make sense to me but I assume it had to do with culture and that they didn’t want Seo-Woo to know that Min-Jung wasn’t actually her biological mother but I feel like they could have worked around that. Honestly I don’t think it is healthy for the child to not know who there parents are because I think it messes a kid up if they find out their parents have been lying to them all their lives. I like that they honestly showed Gwang-Hwa struggling with post traumatic stress disorder after losing his wife in surgery. Even after she comes back to life that it doesn’t automatically make him all better and that this will be something he will have to work towards again. I think everyone is always waiting for this one thing to fix everything and there doesn’t seem to be any magical anything that can fix everything wrong and you just have to keep taking one step forward.

I didn’t really care for all the ghost and spiritual stuff because I disagree with all of that in this drama but I felt like there was still a good story about family love and we all struggle with what happens after death and we all wish our loved ones could come back to us, I found it comforting but also made me very sad. I thought it was an interesting story and isn’t a typical love story so if you like more of a family drama this one was pretty interesting and felt fresh.

The second drama I watched was called 365 Repeat The Year. It is a sci-fi genre drama and is about 10 people who are given the chance to travel back one year in time. They are able to reset the year but then bad things start to happen to the people who have reset. It focuses on Ji Hyung-Joo (Lee Joon-Hyuk) who is detective and wants to get to the bottom of the strange events plaguing the people have reset. It also stars Shin Ga-Hyun (Nam Ji-Hyun) who is a crime webtoon writer and she is given the chance to reset and fix an accident that had happened and finds herself trying to solve the mystery with Hyung-Joo.

I really enjoy fantasy and sci-fi dramas and this one exceeded my expectations, there was consistently a plot twist coming around the corner just about every week. Everything would get switched and you would have to adjust your thinking. The acting and story was just great and kept you focused and interested the whole time. I would really recommend this drama if you like trying to figure out mysteries and who really is the culprit. I really had no idea who it was going to be and was really thrown off all the time.

The only logic of it all that bothered me was that they were warned they could die, so I couldn’t figure out why they didn’t all just leave the country or even just go to a different part of the country to get out of their predicted routine? But I don’t know if they thought if they wouldn’t catch the person doing it eventually they would be found to be killed. The ending was a little anti climatic and I wished there was more of a personal connection for Ga-Hyun and Hyung-Joo because this drama does not really have any romance either. I felt like it was getting there but the focus is really not on romance. I also found some scenes a bit gory and disturbing so if you feel squeamish about showing murder then you may not like this drama, or maybe don’t watch it before bed or in the evening.

If you like mysteries and time traveling dramas, I would highly recommend this drama as I found it really interesting and wasn’t disappointed with the drama! It has great pacing and action and always seems to leave you shocked and excited for the next episode!

The third drama I watched was Find Me In Your Memory. It stars Lee Jung-Hoon (Kim Dong-Wook) who is an anchorman and has a condition hyperthymesia that gives him the ability to remember almost every moment of his life, he can’t forget anything including the most painful memories. It also stars Yeo Ha-Jin (Mun Ka-Young) who struggles to remember her past and this allows her to life in a more carefree manner. She is a top actress and meets Jung-Hoon on his news show and triggers painful memories for Jung-Hoon with her words.

This drama was an interesting drama because it goes from romance, tragedy, thriller to even some comedy. It has a lot of versatility and keeps it fresh and interesting as the drama progresses. The whole memory part of the drama and memory loss is not a new topic for Kdramas and yet it was still an interesting take on the idea of memory. I thought this might just be a typical bubblegum type love story but I was happy that it did have some more dimension to the story. I was happy enough with the ending even though it seemed like it could have been more dramatic but it was good enough. I thought Jung-Hoon was going to be this really stiff un-moving character through the drama and was pleased that he grew with the drama and really felt the chemistry between the two of them.

It wasn’t like blow your mind kind of drama but it was steady and entertaining and slowly crept into your heart. The main problem seemed to be with the ending and how they set it up with the type of breakup, it left the audience screaming give me more. It felt like it was cut off right before the big moment. But I can forgive those type of things and felt like this drama was a good drama that maybe wasn’t as flashy as others, but it was certainly entertaining and kept me interested.

It was a decent romantic drama that kept me interested and had some shocking and exciting events that happen to make it more than just about the romantic relationships. It has some edgier moments that make it pretty entertaining.

The last drama I watched was Hospital Playlist. The story is about five doctors who all went to medical university in 1999 and now work together in the same hospital. The director is Shin Won-Ho and screenwriter Lee Woo-Jung previously worked on the Reply dramas. So the focus is on the many friendships and hardships and heartaches of living life. A second season is planned for 2021.

If you have watched any of the Reply Dramas you know that the dramas will be a large cast and show the intricacies of every day life of a group of people, that you will fall in love with and wish you could be a part of their friendships. I absolutely adore this drama and it made me laugh and cry all the time. I really want to be in a friendship that is portrayed in this drama, it almost makes me sad that I can’t be apart of something like that. I think it works so well because they have a very large cast and it show the intricacies of how everyone is connected to each other. It also keeps it interesting because they have different patient stories in every episode. There are a lot of moving parts but it keeps it interesting and shows the different sides of the 5 main doctors.

I love how the director and writer make their characters, they are so full of life, they show their faults and their talents and it just makes you love them more. They portray the characters in such a relatable way that you can feel for them in the serious moments and the comedy is also so perfect and lightens the heavy moments. Their dramas are about life and living but it also has the perfect amount of romance and questioning of who is going to end up with each other.

One quote really stood out to me when I finished this drama and it goes something like this; “There are three types of people in this world, people who are the happiest when they are eating good food, people who are happiest eating alone, and third type are people who are happiest watching other people eating good food.” This really stuck with me because I think everyone can find where they are themselves in these three types. I just really admire the friendships in this drama and I enjoy the romance but I think showing what it means to be a friend is so important and meaningful to watch. It makes me feel lonely not having some close friends that will always be there for you in the happy and sad moments of their lives. The ability to not have to explain something for someone to understand you and able to comfort you without even having to talk about it.

When I first started watching the first episode or two, I had trouble trying to figure out who everybody was and I was a little bit lost to what was going on but I realized that is usually how the director sets it up. I knew that if I kept watching it was going to get good and thankfully it got so much better. Also the series ends with lots of questions up in the air because there is going to be a second season just in case you don’t want to watch it and then have to wait until 2021 to find out the answers. The characters all became so lovable and memorable that I really think everyone can find something to enjoy in this drama. Hospital Playlist has easily become my favorite drama this round!

December/January/February 2020 Korean Drama Reviews March 6, 2020

Well it has been a while since I last did a review, not sure if anyone really cares at anymore, not sure if I should bother to keep reviewing but for some reason it felt like it has hard to finish some dramas and it feels dragged out! I have to warn you that there are spoilers in these reviews so read at your own risk.

The first drama that I finished was Psychopath Diary that stars Yook Dong-Sik (Yoon Si-Yoon) who is a very timid and gentle person that gets picked on for his personality. He one day witnesses a murder and gets into an accident and has a diary in his possession that belongs to a serial killer and Dong-Sik believes it to be his and thinks that he is a serial killer and psychopath.

I think this was an interesting drama because it questions what does our personality really mean, if you lost your memory and was told you were a completely different person would you be able to change or would you still be the same person after. It is almost like a personality experiment and I found the thought to be intriguing since I have always wondered if I would go to this other place with different people would I become different and I have realized that I have a default and nothing really changes me even in a different environment.

I liked the comedy in this drama and thought it really had some great moments when he was acting like could really be a serial killer. I thought the real serial killer had an interesting character and thought it was acted really well. It kept you on your toes until the very end and I think that it was pretty entertaining all the way through. It seemed like it could really be believable that he believed to be a serial killer because when I first read the summary I had doubts whether they could pull it off so it wasn’t completely ridiculous and unbelievable.

The one thing that bothered me was his memory loss, I feel like that was glazed over quite a bit. He didn’t tell people around him but I think it would be pretty hard to hide that from people at work. It would hard to remember all the people he worked with and hard to situate yourself. I feel like you would want to spend the time trying to remember instead of trying to hold onto the job and planning revenges. Also I found the Bo-Kyung detective character to be a bit dull and there was not much chemistry between her and Dong-Sik but it doesn’t go into the romance category at all so it was fine.

Overall this was a pretty good drama and had me guessing to the end. I would recommend this drama to those who like psychological thrillers!

The second drama that I finished was Chocolate. It is about Lee Kang (Yoon Kye-Sang) who grew up poor with his mother who cooked in a restaurant and he wanted to become a chef like her. He then grew up with his father’s family and started working as a neurosurgeon in the family business. It also stars Moon Cha-Young (Ha Ji-Won) who met Lee Kang as a hungry child and spurred her on to develop a love of food and leads to her becoming a chef. They both end up working at an end of life hospice where they clash with their personalities and hard pasts.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to start this drama because of the whole hospice part because I knew it would have me in tears and it did, every episode, my eyes were wet with tears every episode. I really did enjoy the show because the stories feel so rich and sad yet somehow they felt memorable. I really liked that it went slow and showed the progress between the two main characters and didn’t mind that. I really think it was kept interesting because of the story lines of the many characters kept it interesting and all the food storylines were also a fun thing to watch.

I had problems with the ending, it really bothered me how Cha-Young just randomly leaves because she needs space, it felt out of character and completely unnecessary for her to do this, they didn’t need to build up any more tension and suspense in that way. It wasn’t a good ending and I am frustrated how they didn’t resolve or even let us know what happened with her disease and how can she cook now, it felt like they forgot about that development. Also it seems wrong that Lee Kang didn’t tell her the truth about his mother and I feel like that would have made more sense for her to run away than anything. Also I didn’t like how she revealed her past to him, I was expecting something more exciting and thrilling or just the reactions were ho-hum. I think I had really high expectations for this drama after watching it for a while and I was disappointed by the outcome of the drama. It was still a good drama but I think my expectations for it made me feel let down by this drama.

I think it was a good drama and I was entertained and comforted by the characters in this drama so I do still think it would be worth watching and enjoying.

The third drama that I watched was The War Between Women. It starred Kang Eun-Bo (Jin Se-Yun) as a women who wants to find her twin sister’s killer and will do anything to achieve the goal even if it means she has to become Queen. It also stars Lee Kyung (Kim Min-Kyu) who is the King who comes back from death with the ability to dream about the future of one woman. The story focuses on the selection of a Queen and the politics that surround the throne and who is going to use their power to accomplish their own goals.

I thought it was interesting because of the whole twin story line and seeing how they select a Queen in deeper detail was also something that I found to peak my interest. I didn’t know before that if you made it to the end of the selection you would still live as one of the King’s women. I thought the chemistry was pretty good between the leads and found that the drama did keep my interest because I didn’t know how they were going to resolve the different issues that came up and thought it did have a little bit more of a fresh take for a historical drama.

There are things that bothered me about this drama, first of all Kim Min-Kyu’s voice and acting did feel very fake, I don’t know if I just didn’t like the tone of his voice or what but it just felt like he when he would have to act nice and sweet it just didn’t feel right and seemed to make me think he was very fake. Also the old men politics trying to bring in a new king is just so overdone that I just wanted to skip over the scheming parts because it just was so boring. I also found the whole meeting as kids and falling in love story line needs to die already, I am so sick of it, they need to invent another one already. I keep thinking about my childhood and I feel like even if something would have happened back then, I. don’t think I would carry a torch for anyone when I was that young. I don’t know maybe that is just me, maybe I am dead inside and I feel like it is ridiculous? Also the whole dead back to being alive feels like a very shaky idea and highly unlikely, also the shaman getting rid of his precognition is just weird.

I think there are interesting and at time had good storytelling but as a whole I don’t think this is the best historical drama that I have seen. It is fine but wasn’t great.

The fourth drama that I finished was Crash Landing On You. It starred Yoon Se-Ri (Son Ye-Jin) who is a heiress to a company that she started. She doesn’t get along with her family and everyone is trying to fight for her father’s company. She goes to test some paragliding equipment and she hits some strong winds and ends up landing in North Korea. There she meets Ri Jeong-Hyeok (Hyun-Bin) who is a North Korean Army Captain and he finds her in a tree. She creates a mess and Jeon-Hyeok feels responsible for her and he wants to help her get back to South Korea.

I have never really watched a drama that focused on North Korea and wasn’t sure what to expect because I don’t know very much about North Korea only that the living conditions there are terrible. This drama was interesting because it showed different classes within North Korea. I don’t know how accurate any of the portrayals are in North Korea but I feel like they didn’t fully show how bad the conditions can be but they did give us a small glimpse into how hard it would be because they showed Se-Ri struggling to live there. I really loved the military ensemble cast and thought they added so much to the humanity of the story. I think that it was good that they tried to go with more of a comedy focus then just action and spies and trying to cross the border.

I love how at the end of the episode they give you an extra scene that is usually funny or adorable. The love story is really heart wrenching because you know it feels impossible for the two of them to be together and every time they say good bye your heart breaks more each time. The episodes were extra long but it never felt like the story was being dragged out too much. They move from the North and South and it keeps it interesting and compelling. Hyun-Bin’s character is so fictional it hurts, I really love him for this role and the strong silent type that actually is super sweet and worried and thinking about her and what she told him is really the best.

I know that people would say for Se-Ri’s escape into South Korea was really too simple and unrealistic that she could just cross over all alone. That there would only be one troop watching the border between countries doesn’t seem likely because people are always trying to leave. Also when Jeong-Hyeok’s troop is taken in South Korea I find it unlikely that all of them would agree to go back to the North. I get some of them had family but I think it was unrealistic that all of them would choose to go back. I also didn’t really understand how Jeon-Hyeok and the bad guy were able to send messages to North Korea but he couldn’t contact Se-Ri when he went back. Why didn’t he just teach her the program to be able to have contact. Honestly the ending makes me sad how little they get to see each other. How are they going to really start their lives together if they only get to meet once a year?

Overall it was a really good entertaining drama that had a pretty good love story with a good amount of comedy.

The last drama that I finished was Dr. Romantic 2/ Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim 2. So this is the second season of Dr. Romantic which I have previously watched. Even if you didn’t watch the first season you would be fine to watch the second season but the story is about new doctors that come to work at the Doldam Hospital. I honestly had trouble remembering everything and I still don’t from the first season but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the second season. It stars Boo Yong-Joo (Han Suk-Kyu) who calls himself a romantic and is known as Master Kim and is considered a risky, eccentric doctor that can fix problematic doctors. This season he recruits Cha Eun-Jae (Lee Sung-Kyung) who is a cardiac surgeon who is a perfectionist but can’t seem to stay awake during her surgeries. It also stars Seo Woo-Jin (Ahn Hyo-Seop) who is a general surgeon but faces problems in the workplace because of his past and his need to always do the right thing.

I was actually surprised that this drama got a second season because it feels really rare that Korean Dramas get second seasons as I have not watched many of them over the years. I can’t really understand how this drama has gotten the special attention, I mean it is a good drama but there have been many great dramas I have watched that never got a second season. I am not complaining, I have enjoyed this second season with the new and old characters. I love Master Kim’s character and the way he is always trying to do the smart and right thing. He knows how to help others but he still lets them find the path all on their own. He seems like a great mentor and I love to see how other characters around him interact and change because of him. I really hope that they will do a season 3 now because it feels like they have more stories that they want to tell and I know I will miss this drama. I love how this drama has different mysteries that unravel over time, or sometimes what you first see isn’t what really happened and they go back and you get to see the whole picture. This drama is good and leading in a direction and then showing you were wrong and it goes somewhere else. It has the touching, comedic, and satisfying moments in this drama.

The one thing I found a bit much was the head nurse Oh Myung-Sim who was always yelling so much, her character started to get on my nerves a bit. I get that she is tough and running the show but sometimes I felt like it was just all too much at times and could have been toned down. Also the ending felt like it wasn’t as finished as it could be and that might just be because they want to leave room for another season which is fine. Sometimes the politics in this drama but a bit boring but it still was interesting but it felt like there was a lot of attention paid to that part which I didn’t find terribly exciting. I really enjoyed this drama and found that I think I enjoyed even more than the first season.

Overall this was a solid medical drama that is worth getting a second season!
